Another light Air race. Course 4 was selected by the "Bad Idea" Crew who was doing Race Commitee tonight. Nick Gilmour did such a great job last race that we had to put him back on the helm. Our start wasnt stellar, but we were on the line, and had clear air. The wind had shifted right before the start and we scurried to put up the pole, when I realized we now didnt need it. "Delilah" and "Sea Turtle" were playing with each other and had taken themselves far to the left giving us opportunity to stay within striking distance at Turle Island. The next leg would be a beat and we found ourselves pointing much higher than "sea turtle", and somehow keeping up with "Delilah". Careful work between trimmer and skipper kept the boat moving, but perhaps more than anything lucking out with better air allowed us to pull ahead of "Sea Turtle" and out point "Delilah" to the finish line to win by a nose. The "Blurr" tried double-handing to keep weight down, but evidently their problem is no weight... perhaps its simply sail area aloft that they lack? It was fun to find my phone chock full of nasty messages from the guys on the "Blurr" after the race was over. We cannot make any sense out of how the heaviest boat out there could do so well in such light wind. I told Nick that he posseses "Mad Skills"! |
